Labelling of food products means any words, particulars, trademarks, brand name, pictorial matter or symbol placed on any packaging, document, notice, label, ring or collar accompanying or referring to a given food product.
The purpose of rules on the labelling of food products is to inform and protect the consumer, because it is the information on the food packaging, on the label attached thereto or next to the food product, which is helpful in evaluating and choosing the right food product.
The labelling of food products must comply with the rules on the labelling of food products applicable throughout the European Union, which must ensure the provision of comprehensive information about the products purchased. In addition to legally binding information, manufacturers, or other entities responsible for food labelling may, at their own discretion, provide additional information only if it is correct and does not mislead consumers. Besides the common labelling rules established in the European Union for all food products, individual groups of foodstuffs or products are also subject to the national laws of each Member State of the European Union. The information on the labels of all food products available on the market must be in the national language of the country concerned. Food information must be accurate, clear, and easy to understand for the consumer.
